Hostile prejudice in class: Anna, a 13-old migrant girl, has become increasingly uncomfortable in her class.
Her classmates have begun to make frequent negative comments about her background, and she has been subject to offensive jokes about her culture.
She feels that this hostility frequently undermines her work and that although she likes studying she often skips school.
She turns to her class teacher for help. After exploring possible steps and solutions with her teacher, she decides to talk with her peers who make offensive remarks and help them understand how their comments are hurtful.
Her teacher is understanding of the situation and with the help of the school counselor quickly begins to take other steps to ensure a more comfortable class environment for all.
She organizes extra-curricular and project work activities, which enable the students to get to know each other better.
In time, Anna feels more confident about who she is, and her performance at school improves as a result of her increased confidence and comfort in the class environment.
Questions:
What artistic techniques would you use to raise your students’ awareness about Anna’s problems and to improve the class climate?
Considering Anna’s problems and solutions, how far do you agree with the solutions? Would they work in your context?
